Well, because I'm on-call for the delivery suite over the weekend! Yes.. both days :(

I love medicine, but sometimes... seriously?? My whole weekend? lol (not to mention they scheduled my nights for the week)

Ah well, I think I'll enjoy it though :) O&G so far has been a pretty good run I would say, seen enough PV bleeds to last a lifetime, but well... its still going on pretty good :)

But, it is hectic and time consuming.. I feel so drained... and the fact I don't have a weekend to look forward to for some R&R, and an OSCE right at the end kind of takes the 'fun' away...

But sacrifices must be made no?

Just had my annual dose (only started taking them last year haha) of influenza vaccine today :)

It's nice of the healthboard to be giving out flu vaccines every year (which of course saves them money) :)

Anyhoots...

Received an intradermal vaccine today (it's usually given intramuscularly) which apparently saves them quite a bit of vaccine (a small trial done in the US for 100 people noticed a similar antibody response with only 20% of the dosage)...

I think it causes a little less pain (kind of makes sense since the needle would be shorter), but it does cause a little more irritation in the skin (since the skin is probably more sensitive to inflammatory reactions compared to the muscle), but so far so good I must say :)

I guess only time will tell if the vaccine delivered through the skin is as good as through the muscle...

In other news... lol

Been doing O&G for a week now, last week was a pretty relaxed week for me, this week is a tad more hectic...

Not looking forward to the weekends though, have a whole weekend 7am-7pm shift(s) in the delivery suite :)

While I anticipate it to be a great learning experience, I do think it will get VERY messy... my shoes condemn lah like that lol

Oh well, can't get something for nothing eh?

And... while I was never a big fan of babies... babies are just friggin' cute lol Can't deny it =.="

Mmm... kind of wish I had a car lol Getting around is a pain without one... but I shall persevere... and depend a lot on those with cars and are willing to wake up early (aka Kelvin LOL)

Mmm... yup.. that's about it I guess? Just waiting to burn some time before I go meet up with the neonatal registrars to get something signed off :)

Watched Resident Evil: Afterlife on the hall's projector last night :)

Deep sutures however look cool! The reason? Well.. you don't see them! And that isn't because you covered up the skin layer with a superficial suture... but because you actually bury the knot (along with the rest of the thread) down in the tissue :)

Had lunch that day at Angie's Kitchen (I think that's how you spell it lol) on Thursday because Dr Juriah came for a visit, Auckland paid! :D

Food was pretty good :) Had Hainanese Chicken Rice for the first time in like 8 months lol... Gosh it felt good haha...

Also had Ice Kacang which is always awesome :) Even in the cold weather :P

We've been having pretty nasty weather the past week due to a large storm system... nothing too bad lol But the winds and rain didn't make it all that nice :(

Weather is improving though, today it was pretty sunny :)

Went to Harbour Bridge on Thursday night to take some photos (those with DSLRs did so anyways haha), it was cold!

Why?

The wind was constantly blasting at us the whole time we were there! Then we moved to the other side of the bridge and it wasn't so bad... perhaps the bridge shielded us a little from the wind? :)

I should get my studying done at a greater pace :(

IE9 - Beta

Been trying out the new IE9 Beta for a few days now...

Have to say this is a huge improvement over the previous IEs lol Performance and even aesthetics-wise :) Which is a really good move I think...

But it still doesn't have the nice snappy feel of Chrome which I've grown to like so much...

That said however, it serves its purpose extremely well as a secondary browser (to access some sites which don't render properly with the still infantile in comparison Chrome)

Have heard some good things about Mozilla's Firefox 4 Beta and Opera 10.62...

Mozilla screwed me over with Firefox 3, so its rather unlikely I'm heading back there..

And I just don't appreciate Opera on my desktop (works fantastic as a mobile browser on Windows Mobile 6.5 though) lol

So Chrome I shall stick to :) The Omnibox is something else lah~

Just watched Prince of Persia - Sands of Time on my laptop~

Doesn't have the cinematic feel but it was an enjoyable movie I think ^^

Plot twist at the end was pretty cool~

Some of the acting was a little off I think... but in general it was all ok :D

Felt there wasn't enough 'cool' scenes in it though... the dagger had limited charges :(

Should have been something like the game where you kill sand demons I reckon :D That would have been cooler haha..

USB Flash Drive Benchmarks

Was planning to format my Kingston 4GB (yes I know its old lol) and tried looking online for a guide on what allocation size to use... couldn't find anything specific but the general rule was 'the bigger the faster', at the cost of increased wasting space of course (if you have a 16kb allocation size, and you put in a 17kB sized file, you lose 15kB because you use you 2 16kB slots [16 x 2 = 32 - 17 = 15kB])

So I ran a few benchmarks...

1kB

4kB

8kB

16kB

As we can see, there is a LARGE difference between 1kB and 4kB size (nearly 2MB/s for write) while the difference between 4kB, 8kB and 16kB isn't much (about 0.1 - 0.2MB/s for write)

In conclusion, 4kB is probably the most all-rounded (which is the default allocation size) bet with good speeds and less wastage. Although I chose the 8kB for its more consistent speed throughout the benchmark :)

By the way as a little side info... with regards to the format of the drive... there are a couple out there lol From what I gathered on the Internet~

FAT aka FAT16

Just watched Ip Man (720p FTW) on my laptop~

The screen is no where near as big as the ones in the theaters... and neither is my sound system... but that was one awesome movie :)

But its quite relaxing in the sense that it isn't structured very rigidly... but it also means it requires lots of discipline...

Went for ward rounds which wans't very exciting lol

Then we had teachings (which was good)...

Grand round (which was also good)~

And.. finally rushed back for a core topic presentation, but the associate professor evidently forgot about it.. so we have to repeat I think lol

First day...

Its been pretty good :) The registrar in my team is a Malaysian so.. I guess its pretty interesting lol

Been learning lots :)

Hopefully I'll learn even more as time passes...

Not looking forward to the assignments though =.="

Waiwera Hot Pools~

Today Grafton Hall organised a hall trip to the Waiwera Hot Pools in Orewa~

I expected it to be a relatively chilling thing, you know just hang out near the hot pools like what most people do lol

Boy was I wrong lol

It turned out, Waiwera Hot Pools was actually more of a water theme park than anything else :)

And while they did have 3 rather large pools that had varying temperatures... that was about it to do with actual hot pools per say haha... Oh, and the fact that I suppose most of the water there (if not all) would be supplied by the hot pools lol (had a funny sulphur smell to it)

The slides were pretty awesome :)

Had quite a few slides which I must say were fun as hell haha... ironically the tallest one wasn't the one that gave the biggest rush.. it was something much more humble in height called the Blackhole that trumped the scene :) Goes to show that size isn't always the determining factor eh?

The Blackhole was awesome because it was extremely windy.. and you picked up an amazing amount of speed everytime you hit a corner...

Good stuff.

We spent most of the time lounging around the hot pools and a fair bit getting on the slides :)

All in all.. good times :)

We also had tonnes of free junk food and drinks that the hall so graciously provided us with :D Which was awesome after a good day of fun ^^

Finished my ED run today~

Was a little sad that its over.. but it was a pretty good run I think :)

Couldn't finish getting all the tutorials in the 6 allocated sessions, so I did half a session today to get the other 2 signed off :)

All in all I enjoyed the run :)

General Medicine is up next... oh gosh T.T

I haven't really been blogging lately lol

Anyhoo...

ED is turning out better and better lol

I think I enjoy it a lot more now than I used to when I just started :)

I still think its not as exciting as it should be... but I quite enjoy the slow trickle of patients in haha...

Surprisingly you get to spend quite a lot of time with the patient, not having to worry they just might die in front of you lol

Anyways...

The last few shifts have been pretty fun lol I'm not so turned off by the afternoon shift anymore, although I still think the morning shift is better :)

I've got the see quite a few patients with interesting presenting complaints.. and an even more interesting diagnosis... proves the age-old saying of you can't judge a book by its cover.. and I guess that's one of reasons why medicine is after all such an interesting field... people don't always come with a crushing left-sided chest pain that radiates to the left arm/up the jaw with diaphoresis and tachycardia...

Sometimes, they just come in with an epigastric pain... lol

And today was pretty awesome~ I had the privilege of performing a suture from start to finish (ie I did all the work, including putting in the local anesthetic) :)

It was good to know I'm capable of certain procedures and the doctors trust me enough to do it :)

Tomorrow is my last (or second last depending on whether or not I decide to take an extra shift) shift... feeling rather sad.. and a bit intimidated by General Medicine next T.T

GPOPS is a little too draggy lah..

Don't get me wrong, I think GPOPS is a great idea but it is getting a little too long lol

Doctor: Hmm... no, but what you can do is go swimming in the sea (it was winter) and stand on the beach for an hour.
Patient: But that will give me pneumonia!
Doctor: Pneumonia I can treat, the common cold I can't!

I had a good 4 days at Valley Medical Centre :)

While the journey was tiring... the results were rewarding~

Definitely learned a LOT more about general practise I did in the last 4 days!

Hopefully my rural GP will be just as useful if not more!

GPOPS next week.. wonder how that will be like XD

The hours of commuting seems to be worth it :)

Quite enjoying my run so far :)

Its been pretty rewarding I must say, a lot better than the GP posting I did back in Malaysia lol

Its quite different, and you get to do a lot more stuff (I'm actually given a consultation room to see patients first before getting the GP in to discuss)~

Although, rather unfortunate I have to commute around an hour per way everyday... 1/3 of the time spent walking lol

Its tiring :(

Today was basically introduction to our GP run...

I have to say, it was a really nice experience :) Kudos to the team who organised today! Had a really good time ^^

Tamaki campus looks really nice, looks so much better than Grafton campus haha...

Quite like their high ceilings and open concept :)

Gotta get up quite early for GP tomorrow *sigh*

35 minute train ride followed by a 20 minute walk to the medical centre I'm attached to *facepalm*

And my rural GP posting hasn't been resolved :(

Kelvin's Birthday!

First of all, a very happy belated birthday to my aunt Poh Leng in the UK :) Hope you had a nice one :)

Today is Kelvin's birthday :)

Annd....

We celebrated it yesterday!

And it was a good thing too... because he suspected we were doing it for him TODAY... and so it being yesterday was a complete surprise to him :D

We tried to err.. coax him not to have Grafton food... which I think Sharon successfully did lol Because in the end, he suggested we should go out for dinner~

And... besides feeling rather relieved we agreed to it rather spontaneously, didn't suspect anything was amiss!

And so we prepared to go for dinner :)

And just as he was leaving the room...

Boon: Hey Kelvin! We're blindfolding you to bring you to dinner!
Kelvin: Crap man you guys! No way!

But he relented in the end :)

End result:

We proceeded to bring him towards Nol Bu Ne (a Korean restaurant)... but since he was getting such a good idea of his location... we had to throw him off track quite a few times... even as to bring him into a carpark in one of the buildings along Symonds Street lol

It was rather uneventful along the way... well... that's not entirely true lol

We were asked a couple of times what we were doing lol

And... Kelvin ter-stepped into a small puddle of water because Boon failed to warn him haha...

And there were a couple of shots that were taken just for kicks lol

Anyways... we managed to reach Nol Bu Ne :)

Annd...

The blindfold was removed...

With everyone greeting him a happy birthday :)

And everyone.. was a lot of people lol

After Kelvin 'kam-sia'-ed everyone... let the feast begin!!

Kelvin, Sharon, Boon and I decided to share a steamboat and the BBQ...

It was awesome :)

The bulgogi streamboat had a rich and flavourful broth with tender beef chunks and a nice glass noodle portion to go with it...

The pork belly BBQ was nice with just the right amount of fat when cooked properly, served with some vegetables and garlic made it a treat to have with the rice~

Damage?

NZD 18.50 per person for that 'set' we had lol

And after a very sumptuous dinner.. we walked back to Grafton for the our equivalent of an 'after-party' I suppose lol

Just chilled in the gaming lounge, taking photos, playing snooker and table tennis...

And at 12:00, we brought in a SOLID chocolate cake (transported across many hours from North Shore) which I dare say... would be one of the best chocolate cakes I've ever tried... it was literally SOLID... from chocolate!!

Anyhoo... I went to sleep quite early, I was really tired...

Anyways...

I hope you enjoyed your birthday Kelvin! A lot of thanks would have to go to Sharon for putting in all the effort of putting things together! Usha and Boon contributed lots too :)

Had Health Informatics in the morning, pretty dry stuff lol

Had the afternoon off~

Went for lunch at Papaya, Kaz's birthday treat for Kelvin :)

It was good, I took the sushi set which cost me NZD 9 T.T

Have to say though, it was well worth the price :)

Kaz belanja-ed us some tako balls which were awesome...

All in all.. a good meal :)

Then...

Went for consultation practise of which we were told how to prepare for the upcoming exam on it lol

And.. went for tutorial~

Which unfortunately ended late... we missed our dinner..

Danny was nice enough to grab us a Magnum each :)

And then.. we decided to eat out~

What did we have?

Malaysian food of course :D

And to be honest... it was goooooood ;)

But yumminess came at a price... NZD 12 on average for a plate of food :(

Hell... it was worth it.
